ONE of Britain’s top boxing referee’s has sensationally removed himself from an upcoming British title fight, after he made an allegedly biased post on Twitter.
MARCUS MCDONNELL tweeted that he thought British lightweight title challenger DERRY MATTHEWS was “a nice guy” and was set to take charge of his fight with ANTHONY CROLLA.
However, Crolla’s trainer Joe Gallagher believed that this was a clear sign of favouritism from a man who has spent nearly 25 years in the boxing industry. After assessing the situation, McDonnell decided to pull out of the bout after the furore the tweet had stirred.
Now Crolla, 25 is all set to make his second defence of the title against the 28-year-old Matthews on April 21st at Oldham Sports Centre.
Matthews is seeking to capture the Lonsdale belt for the first time having failed in recent attempts to claim the European and world titles.
