VETERAN American star “Sugar” Shane Mosley has been handed another big pay-day after it was announced he will face unbeaten WBC Light Middleweight champion Saul Alvarez.
Mosley will be facing a fighter almost 20 years his junior when he faces the young prodigy on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather vs Miguel Cotto fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5th.
The 40-year old Californian has not won a fight since he beat Antonio Margarito for the WBA Welterweight title in January 2009. Since then he has recorded losses to Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao and a draw to Sergio Mora in 2010. In his fight with Pacquiao, he was undoubtebly showing his age and well past his best days.
Alvarez, by contrast, has a perfect record in 40 contests at the age of just 21 and has once again the Mexican has been cutely matched by Golden Boy Promotions – the youngster’s last six opponents, including Britain’s Matthew Hatton and Ryan Rhodes, were all at least 10 years his senior.
It remains to be seen what Mosley (46-7-1) has to offer Alvarez – other than a ‘name’ on the resume – or indeed why Golden Boy have pitched him in against the hard-hitting Mexican.
Is it a ‘golden handshake’ after Mosley split with the promoter last year ? – or are Golden Boy setting the 40-year-old up for a big fall.
Either way, it looks like at least one fight too far for the man known as ‘Sugar’.
